Pakistan Poll Results Delayed as Imran Khan’s Party Claims Win in First Results

Delays in counting votes after Thursday's election in Pakistan highlighted a disputed result due to supporters of the jailed former leader. Imran Khan won a shock victory in a country where the military retains strong influence over politics.

Friday at 8:15 a.m. in Pakistan, Pakistani electoral authorities announced the results of 12 of the 265 elections to the National Assembly, the party of the three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif one behind Khan's supporters, who are running as independents after his political vehicle was effectively barred from running. At the same time, after Pakistan's last elections in 2018, unofficial counts showed results of more than 200 seats, with Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf holding a commanding lead.
