Louisiana to deploy National Guard to southern border

Louisiana plans to deploy 150 National Guard troops to the southern Texas border, after Congress failed to reach a border deal.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry announced the move Thursday in Baton Rouge, adding to a growing list of Republican governors offering to help Texas with resources amid that state's battle with the Biden administration on border security.

“Because the federal government won't act, because the president won't do his job, because Congress refuses to put in place a strong immigration plan that protects this country and keeps people in and out of this country as it has been done since the beginning, the states will act,” Landry said.

He said the federal government had essentially “whistled at people who were trying to come into the country illegally and said, 'Look, if you swim across the Rio Grande, we'll let you in that way.'”

The deployment of Louisiana Guard troops would likely occur in March at an estimated cost of $3 million. The move must still be approved by the Republican-controlled state legislature.

Troops at the border would not have the power to stop migrants, the brigadier general said. Gen. Michael Greer, director of the Louisiana Military Department, said Thursday.

Besides Louisiana, Florida has sent about 1,000 members of its National Guard to the border.
