Portishead’s Beth Gibbons Announces Debut Solo Album, Shares New Song: Listen

Portishead's Beth Gibbons has finally announced her debut solo album. Released on May 17, the LP a decade in the making is called Outdated livesand below you can watch the director Tony Ourslerthe kaleidoscopic video for the single “Floating on a moment.”

Plans were made for Outdated lives in 2013. The songs address anxieties related to aging, according to a press release. “I realized what life was like without hope,” she said. “And it was a sadness I had never felt. Before, I had the ability to change my future, but when you're dealing with your body, you can't make it do something it doesn't want to do.

It’s also a farewell album, she added. “People started dying. When you're young, you never know the end, you don't know how it's going to end. You think: we're going to get past this. It will get better. Some endings are difficult to digest…. Now that I've come out the other end, I just think you have to be brave.

The album follows Gibbons' sparse output since she, Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley released Third—itself the product of an 11-year hiatus—in 2008. In 2019, she released the closest thing to a studio album since: Symphony of Sorrowful Songsa recording of the Henryk Górecki symphony, made with Krzysztof Penderecki and the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra.

That aside, Gibbons has made sporadic appearances with other artists, the most high-profile being on Kendrick Lamar's “Mother I Sober.” Others range from a collaboration with JJ Doom to a Black Sabbath cover with a metal band; she also sang songs by Joy Division and David Bowie with the Afghan girl group Miraculous Love Kids. And, in 2010, Gibbons released a song called “Prospera's Coda” for a film of Storm.
