President Biden and King Abdullah II of Jordan will make a public appearance together during a visit to the White House on Monday. Jordan is a U.S. ally that has long played a crucial mediating role in Middle East peace negotiations.
Jordan will likely be heavily involved in attempts to consolidate any new deal reached between Israel and the Palestinian leadership. But as AP reports, Jordan and other Arab countries are calling for a ceasefire as a precondition for such talks.
Jordan's indirect involvement in the war between Israel and Hamas intensified in January when three US service members stationed in Jordan were killed in a drone strike on a US base. Biden identified an Iranian-backed militia as responsible for the attack, which also injured more than 40 other people.
The leaders are scheduled to speak starting at 4 p.m. EST.
